A 2024 review in Current Opinion in Psychology by Claudia von Bastian, Eleanor Hyde, and Shuangke Jiang looks at popular cognitive interventions — including process-based cognitive training and cognitively stimulating everyday leisure — and finds a more useful pattern. People often get clearly better at the things they practice. Broad upgrades to unrelated abilities are much harder to earn (von Bastian et al., 2024).
That distinction matters if you care about cognitive reserve as a long-term project. In brand language, reserve is about supporting long-term mind resilience through ongoing engagement — not about promising that one week of drills “builds reserve” like a score. Daily practice still matters. It just matters for more ordinary reasons than the ads suggest.
The pattern: strong on the drill, limited elsewhere
The review’s through-line is transfer.
Near transfer means improvement on tasks similar to what you trained. Far transfer means improvement on different abilities and contexts. Across cognitive training research, large gains on trained tasks are common; reliable far transfer is not. The authors summarize a practical interpretation: practice often helps people use their existing cognitive capacity more efficiently, especially inside the trained paradigm. It is unlikely to expand hard capacity limits in a general way (von Bastian et al., 2024).
Working memory is a clear example. It keeps a few representations available for what you are doing right now — and it is severely limited, typically discussed as about three to five items at a time. That limit helps explain why “unlimited mental upgrade” is a weak story, and why short, specific practice is a stronger one (von Bastian et al., 2024).
Leisure is not automatically “brain training”
The review also discusses cognitively stimulating leisure — reading, games, learning demanding hobbies, and similar enrichment.
Here the useful nuance is challenge. Activities with greater cognitive demand appear more promising than low-demand pastimes. The Synapse Project comparison cited in the review (high-challenge skill learning such as digital photography or quilting versus less demanding alternatives) did not produce a simple post-test win for cognition across groups, but higher-challenge engagement was linked to neural-efficiency changes in regions tied to attention and semantic processing. In plain language: the kind of engagement may matter more than collecting random “brain activities.” (von Bastian et al., 2024).
That aligns with how cognitive reserve is usually discussed outside marketing: not one puzzle type forever, but a life that keeps asking your mind to adapt.
What this means for a daily mind-care routine
If you want a practice you can keep:
- Keep sessions short and specific. One clear task beats a vague promise to “train the brain.”
- Judge progress locally first. Did you get cleaner at the exercise you actually did?
- Treat far transfer as a bonus, not the pitch. If focus at work improves, great — do not make that the condition for continuing.
- Prefer challenge over comfort-scrolling. A slightly demanding hobby or exercise is closer to the review’s leisure point than passive re-exposure.
- Return tomorrow. Long-term mind care is about accumulation over time. Consistency is the mechanism you control this week.
